The 2018 Outermost Regions Forum focused on two topics: the potential of the Blue economy for the ORs and the state of scientific knowledge and data collection on fisheries and maritime affairs. This year it is proposed to focus discussions on the development of blue economy strategies in the ORs, following the call made by the Commission in the 2017 Communication on all ORs to develop such a strategy. This should also support the preparation of the post-2020 EMFF operational programmes. Special emphasis will be put on social aspects, the risks and opportunities for the blue economy regarding climate change adaptation and the potential of blue bio-economy in these regions.
The Steering committee met on June 4 and 5 in Horta, Azores. The regions pursued their work on all the upcoming events in which they will take part, in particular the Copernicus Conference, which will take place on the 6th and 7th of June in Horta, the European Sustainable Energy Week from June 18 to June 20 in Brussels, the Blue Economy Forum for ORs organized by the European Commission on July 9 in Brussels and the REGIO WEEK in October in Brussels as well.
The Conference of the Presidents of the outermost regions organized a workshop within the framework of the European Maritime Day held in Lisbon on May 17. This workshop helped to highlight the maritime potential of ORs as well as the projects implemented in this sector.
Between the 18th and the 19th of March, Dana Spinant, Director of the Directorate-General of Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission, and Paula Duarte Gaspar, Head of Unit of the Outermost Regions in the same Directorate-General, have travelled to the Azores.
(Español) La XXIII Conferencia de Presidentes, que tendrá lugar en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria durante los días 22 y 23 de noviembre, reunirá a los nueve presidentes de las RUP, y contará también con la presencia del Rey de España, el Presidente de la Comisión Europea, la Comisaria Europea de Política Regional, el Vicepresidente del Parlamento Europeo, así como los representantes de los tres Estados miembros, Francia, España y Portugal.
The second edition of the Forum “Clean Energy Initiative for the Islands of the EU” will take place next November 4, 5 and 6 in Lanzarote, organized by the regional ministry for economy, industry, commerce and knowledge (Consejería de Economía, Industria, Comercio y Conocimiento) of the Government of the Canary Islands together with the Secretariat of such initiative, on behalf of the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission.
The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to sensitize the members of the Committee of the Regions on the outermost reality to favor the adoption of messages that defend the interests of the ORs during the participation of this institution in the European legislative and decision-making process; On the other hand, to bring together all the stakeholders involved in the implementation of the EC strategy 6 months after the adoption of the same for a first exchange on its content and monitoring of its actions.
(Español) El objetivo de este encuentro de los Presidentes de las RUP con los Presidentes de España, Francia y Portugal, previo al Consejo Europeo de primavera es visibilizar el apoyo, al más alto nivel, al impulso del encaje específico de la ultraperiferia en el ordenamiento jurídico europeo, especialmente respecto a la implementación de la nueva estrategia de la Comisión Europea en favor de las RUP.
